Period Patterns Houpelands c. 1390-1490 No 26

This very comfortable style, flowing from the shoulder to the hem, apparently first developed in Italy around 1380, but by 1400 was found throughout Europe. Belted or loose, houpelandes were usually worn over a cotehardie. They were worn as a outer garment, and could involve many yards of fabric. Sometimes made in contrasting colors with the cotehardie, with sides drapped or looped through belt.
